A hazmat suit, or hazardous materials suit, is a piece of personal protective equipment that consists of an impermeable whole-body garment worn to protect health workers and emergency responders working with or near hazardous materials (hazmat). Hazmat covering suits provide protection by completely isolating emergency workers from hazardous chemicals, infectious agents, and radiological or particulate hazards. The evolution of hazmat covering suit materials and technologies over the past several decades has led to incredibly effective protection while also enhancing worker mobility and comfort.
Early Development of Chemical Protection Suits
Some of the earliest chemical protection suits date back to World War I, when soldiers needed protection from new chemical weapons like mustard gas on the battlefields of Europe. Simple rubberized cotton and rubber Hazmat Suits provided basic barrier protection but had poor mobility and wearability.
After World War II, chemical plants and other industrial facilities producing hazardous materials started adopting similar early barrier suits for workers handling dangerous chemicals. However, these suits had poor ergonomics and afforded only minimal protection compared to modern hazmat gear.
