Detergent are surfactants that help remove dirt, grease, stain and other unwanted substances when combined with water. They are key ingredients in many household and industrial cleaning products like laundry detergents, dishwasher detergents, soap etc. Detergent work by reducing the surface tension of water which helps it to better penetrate oils and other unwanted residues.

Types of Detergent chemicals

Anionic detergents

Anionic detergents are the most commonly used type of detergent. They have negatively charged hydrophilic groups in their structure. Common anionic detergents include sulfates, sulfonates and carboxylates.
Detergent Chemicals Linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) and alcohol ethoxy sulfates (AES) are two widely used examples of anionic detergents due to their good cleaning abilities and biodegradability.

Cationic detergents

Cationic detergents contain positively charged quaternary ammonium groups in their structure which gives them antibacterial properties in addition to cleaning abilities. They are commonly used as fabric softeners and in personal care products like shampoos. However, they can cause irritation to skin and eyes at high concentrations.
