What is a Docking Station?
A docking station, also known as a port replicator or dock, is a device that provides higher-performance expansion capabilities for a laptop computer or other portable device when placed at a work space. Docking stations connect a laptop to multiple peripherals using a single connector, avoiding the need to connect and disconnect multiple devices repeatedly.
Types of Docking Stations
There are several types of docking stations available to suit different connection and expansion needs:
USB Docking Stations
USB Docking Station connect to a laptop via a USB Type-C or USB 3.0 port. They offer basic expansion by adding a few additional USB ports and sometimes an Ethernet or HDMI port. USB docks are more portable but have limited expansion options.
Thunderbolt Docking Stations
Thunderbolt docks provide significantly more bandwidth than USB docks, allowing connections to multiple high-resolution displays, high-speed external storage and networking. Thunderbolt docks can drive two 4K displays or one 5K/6K display with their increased throughput of up to 40Gbps.
