Backhoe loaders, also known as loader backhoes, are versatile vehicles that serve multiple functions at construction and landscaping job sites. They are capable of performing digging, trenching, material handling, grading and other earth moving tasks with the same machine.
History and Development
The Backhoe Loaders design evolved from early excavator/loader machines used in the early 20th century. As construction needs grew after World War 2, manufacturers integrated backhoe and loader capabilities into a single vehicle for improved efficiency. Two of the earliest backhoe loader models were introduced by J.I. Case and John Deere in the late 1950s. Through the 1960s and 70s, features like increased hydraulics power and extendable backhoes were added. Current backhoe loaders have advanced controls, high strength materials and powerful engines/transmissions for working in demanding conditions.
